Apple releases firmware update for AirPods fixing critical Bluetooth flaw

Take action: Although exploiting this flaw requires an attacker within bluetooth range, such an attack can easily happen in an office environment. Patching your AirPods isn't difficult, make sure you update the firmware.

Apple has released a firmware update for its AirPods lineup addressing a critical Bluetooth vulnerability.

The flaw, tracked as CVE-2024-27867 (CVSS score 9.1) allows attackers within Bluetooth range to potentially spoof a user’s device and gain unauthorized access to their AirPods.

For affected users, the AirPods firmware update will be applied automatically when AirPods are paired with an iPhone or another compatible device.

This update, identified as Firmware 6A326 and 6F8, applies to several models, including AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, Powerbeats Pro, and Beats Fit Pro.

To verify the update:

  • On iOS Devices: Navigate to Settings > Bluetooth, select the information icon next to the AirPods, and check the firmware version.
  • On Macs: Go to System Settings > Bluetooth and check the firmware version of the connected AirPods.
