Università Roma Tre reports that on the night of May 8, 2025 they experienced a  cyberattack that resulted in a complete disruption of the university's IT infrastructure and rendered all institutional websites inaccessible.

Università Roma Tre is an Italian public research university founded in 1992 as the third public university in Rome, with approximately 40,000 students

The attack was detected by the university's technical staff, triggering a rapid response protocol that involved both national cybersecurity authorities and law enforcement.

The university's Information Systems Area contacted the Italian National Cybersecurity Agency and the Postal Police, who arrived at the university's facilities to implement necessary emergency procedures. The initial investigation and response efforts continued until 2:00 AM, focusing on understanding the scope of the attack, evaluating damages, and initiating recovery operations.

Technical departments of the university have been working continuously to restore critical services, with priority given to essential administrative systems like accounting services, electronic document protocol systems, IRIS research management, and student secretariat services. By the evening of May 9, the university had already managed to restore access to GOMP (the student and faculty secretariat services portal).

The nature of the attack, any exposed data and number of affected individuals is not disclosed.

The university is aiming to restore all primary services by Monday, May 12, 2025, and has apologized for the inconvenience caused to students, faculty, and staff. The restoration work continues with the entire IT technical sector fully engaged in the recovery process.
