Bank of America reports data breach after losing customer documents lost in transit

Bank of is reporting a data breach that occurred on March 6, 2025, involving the loss of customer documentation during transit. According to the notification sent to affected customers on April 1, 2025, the bank has been unsuccessful in recovering the lost documents despite multiple attempts.

The breach compromised customer information related to savings bonds, including:

  • First and last name
  • Address
  • Phone number
  • Social Security number
  • Bank account number

It's not clear how documents were lost in transit and where they were transported. The number of individuals affected by this breach are not disclosed.

The bank has conducted internal investigations to prevent and minimize financial impact to customers. They are actively monitoring affected banking relationships for suspicious activity.

Bank of America has committed to working with customers to resolve any unauthorized transactions related to this incident and is providing complimentary two-year memberships to Experian IdentityWorks™. The affected customers must enroll in the Experian IdentityWorks service by July 27, 2025, using the provided activation code and engagement number.

The bank has established a dedicated Privacy Response Unit for affected customers, which can be reached Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern time.

This is another in a series of incidents at Bank of America, third reported this year. Just this year, Bank of America already reported two breaches - one impacting loan customers and another caused by improper data destruction.
