The BBC is conducting an investigation following a data breach that exposed the personal information of over 25,000 current and former employees that are part of the BBC Pension Scheme.
The breach involved private records "being copied from an online data storage servic", which indicates exposed data online in an unsecured storage. Approximately 25,290 individuals were impacted by the breach.
The leaked data includes:
- Names
- Dates of birth
- Sex
- Home addresses
- National Insurance numbers
- Membership indication in the BBC Pension Scheme
The BBC has stated that there is no evidence to suggest that the incident was a ransomware attack. The BBC Pension Scheme notified affected members and the breach has been reported to the UK's Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) and the Pensions Regulator.
