Learn More

The Encina Wastewater Authority (EWA) in Carlsbad, California, has reportedly been targeted by the BlackByte ransomware group. EWA is a critical infrastructure entity serving over 379,000 residents and businesses in North San Diego County, covering a 125-square-mile area. It provides services of wastewater treatment, resource recovery, and environmental protection.

BlackByte publicly announced on its dark web site that it had executed a cyberattack against EWA, hinting at the potential sale of sensitive documents stolen during the breach.

As of now, the Encina Wastewater Authority has not issued a statement regarding the alleged cyberattack. BlackByte, meanwhile, has released sample documents online to substantiate its claim, offering to sell or delete the data upon contact.

Given the critical nature of EWA's services, the potential implications of the breach are severe, but at the moment there is no clear confirmation whether EWA was hacked, as well as what is the impact of the attack.
