Canton Municipal Court officials in Ohio reports that nearly the driver’s license information of approximately 300,000 people may have been compromised in a breach of the Stark County Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS).
The incident occurred in July 23, 2024, when a public user account in the court’s online database was accessed by an unauthorized individual. The hacker used the access to run multiple queries within the CJIS, drawing out sensitive information. By the time the court’s cybersecurity team detected unusual activity two days later, the intruder had potentially gathered data related to individuals with past traffic violations or criminal cases in Stark County.
Once the breach was detected, Canton immediately disabled the compromised account and brought in a cybersecurity firm to assess the damage.
The exposed data includes:
- names,
- addresses,
- driver’s license information
A total of 269,276 individuals nationwide, all tied to Stark County records, might have had their driver’s license information exposed.
The city’s insurance company began sending out notification letters on October 11, 2024
