The Communications Workers Union (CWU), a major trade union representing employees across various sectors in the UK, including technology and telecommunications, is addressing a cyberattack.

Initially reported as a severe IT outage late last week, the union later confirmed the situation as a cyberattack whose full impact is still under evaluation.

On March 22, CWU disclosed that its email systems were inoperative and had enlisted the expertise of third-party cybersecurity professionals, who have been conducting on-site analyses since 0900 UTC on March 21st. Additionally, certain systems were taken offline as a preventative measure against further damage.

No details about the cyberattack's specific cause, the exact nature of potentially exposed data, or the number of affected individuals have been disclosed. CWU confirms that member data is stored within the compromised IT systems, and it remains uncertain whether a breach of personal data has occurred. Members have been advised to stay alert to potential phishing scams.

The UK's ICO has acknowledged being informed of the incident, noting that organizations are required to report breaches if they pose a risk to the rights and freedoms of individuals involved. Such reports must be made within 72 hours where feasible, and affected individuals should be notified promptly.
