Cooper Health System data breach exposes information of nearly 60K patients

Cooper University Health Care, a South Jersey's healthcare system, is reporting a data breach that compromised the personal and protected health information of 57,412 current and former patients.
The security incident, which occurred in May 2024, involved unauthorized access to sensitive patient data by an unknown actor.
Cooper Health System detected unusual network activity on May 14, 2024. They launched an investigation with the assistance of third-party cybersecurity experts.
The breach affected Cooper University Health Care's network including:
- Cooper University Hospital in Camden, New Jersey;
- Cooper University Hospital Cape Regional;
- Children's Regional Hospital at Cooper;
- six urgent care centers; and more than 130 outpatient offices throughout the region.

- Names
- Dates of birth
- Social Security numbers
- Health insurance information
- Treatment information
- Medical record numbers
- Medical history information
The nature of the attack is not disclosed. Cooper reported the incident to the FBI and is cooperating with the federal investigation
The internal investigation took eleven months after the initial detection. As of end of March 2025 and promptly began notifying affected individuals. Cooper has established a dedicated toll-free call center at 1-877-623-0094 to address questions and concerns from affected individuals. The organization is providing complimentary identity protection and credit monitoring services to all affected individuals.
