Chattanooga State has provided an official statement regarding the cyber attack, stating that they are actively working with law enforcement and a cyber forensics vendor to investigate the incident.

Chattanooga State experienced a system shutdown, causing disruptions to student services and the cancellation of events.

Specific details about the nature and scope of the attack are not disclosed at this time, following law enforcement recommendations.

Chattanooga State Community College reports details on the a ransomware attack that occurred in May. 

Upon discovering the breach on May 6, the college temporarily took its computer systems offline while investigating the attack, resulting in class cancellations for about two weeks in May, affecting 17 students, and delayed the start of summer classes, impacting approximately 500 students.

The attack compromised the personal information of 1,244 individuals, mainly those who had taken the GED test at the college's testing center in 2012 and 2013.

Ransomware gang Snatch publicly posted a listing of the stolen data from Chattanooga State on their website on May 23, and later updated the page on June 22. The Snatch listing includes personal details of administrators at Chattanooga State:

  • names,
  • phone numbers,
  • emails

Chattanooga State has decided not to negotiate with the attackers based on guidance from the FBI, Tennessee Board of Regents, and cybersecurity experts.

The college will provide free credit monitoring services from Equifax for one year to the affected individuals, who will be notified by mail.
