Data Breach claimed on Indian eMigrate Portal
Learn More
A hacker is selling a database reportedly linked to India's eMigrate portal, which is used by blue-collar workers to legally emigrate overseas. The portal, operated by India’s Ministry of External Affairs, provides services such as emigration clearance tracking and insurance for migrant workers. The eMigrate portal claims that around half a million people received emigration clearance in 2023.
The hacker claims to have over 200,000 entries of internal and registered users. They have released a sample of the compromised data on a well-known cybercrime forum. This sample includes:
- Full names
- Email addresses
- Phone numbers
- Dates of birth
- Mailing addresses
- Passport details
TechCrunch has verified the authenticity of some of the published data. Phone numbers were validated through a third-party app, and one record was confirmed to belong to an Indian government foreign ambassador, matching public information.
It is not clear if the data was directly obtained from the eMigrate servers or from a previous breach
India’s Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) stated they are taking appropriate action in coordination with the concerned authorities.
