A ransomware attack on Fincantieri Marine Group, a U.S. subsidiary of the Italian shipbuilding firm Fincantieri has resulted in the exposure of personal data of approximately 17,000 individuals. Fincantieri Marine Group constructs the Navy's Freedom-class Littoral Combat Ships and Constellation-class guided-missile frigates.

On April 12, 2023, Fincantieri detected a cyberattack involving file encryption. The investigation revealed unauthorized access to certain systems between April 6 and April 12, 2023, leading to potential unauthorized data acquisition. The attack has compromised personal information 16,769 indivuduals, including names and Social Security numbers. The Navy, did not provide comments on the incident. The attack had also disrupted server operations crucial for manufacturing processes, temporarily halting machines used for welding, cutting, and other tasks.

No details are disclosed about the nature of the attack.

At the time of the attack, Fincantieri did not immediately comment but later confirmed that they had suffered a cybersecurity incident leading to temporary disruption of some computer systems. The company's cybersecurity team quickly isolated the affected systems and informed the relevant authorities and partners. They also engaged additional experts to investigate and restore the systems.

Fincantieri is offering two years of free credit monitoring services to the victims.
