The central Virginia transit system, operated by the Greater Richmond Transit Company (GRTC), experienced a cyber incident around Thanksgiving, leading to disruptions in its computer network. GRTC, which serves millions in Richmond, Chesterfield, and Henrico Counties with bus and specialized transportation services, acknowledged the network disruption that affected certain applications and parts of their network.
Details about the nature of the attack, whether it was ransomware or if any data was compromised, are not disclosed. The Play ransomware gang claimed responsibility for the cyberattack, listing GRTC on its leak site and setting a deadline of December 13 for an undisclosed ransom payment.
A spokesperson for GRTC, mentioned that the IT staff promptly addressed and rectified the network issues. Additionally, GRTC has hired external computer experts to assess the extent and nature of the incident.
