The cybersecurity platform vx-underground has reported that an unnamed hacking collective is taking credit for a significant breach of Coin Cloud, a prominent Bitcoin ATM provider that declared bankruptcy in February 2023. Coin Cloud was a key figure in the cryptocurrency ATM market, boasting over 5,000 ATMs globally and facilitating transactions in over 40 cryptocurrencies at its height.

The hackers allege ithhey have taken

  • 70,000 ID images of the faces of clients,
  • sensitive data of about 300,000 clients, a
  • the source code for Coin Cloud’s backend infrastructure.

vx-underground shared the hackers' private channel communications on Twitter. Edited images accompanying the disclosure appear to showcase customer selfies and identifiable details such as

  • names,
  • addresses,
  • Social Security numbers,
  • dates of birth,
  • jobs,
  • contact numbers.

Coin Cloud hasn't provided any information regarding the breach.

This data breach poses a risk to individuals in the U.S. and Brazil by exposing them up to identity theft and other cybercrimes. Additionally, the theft of Coin Cloud’s source code prompts alarms over potential exploitation of the firm's systems and further theft.
