Interboro School District hit by cyberattack, exposing student and staff data

The Interboro School District, serving approximately 3,300 students across Delaware County, Pennsylvania, was hit by a ransomware attack claimed by RansomHub gang. 

The incident began on October 28, 2024 and disrupted educational operations across six schools serving the communities of Norwood, Glenolden, Tinicum Township, and Prospect Park, forcing the cancellation of classes on October 29 due to complete network failures. 

The district's response engaged specialized IT teams and Mullen Coughlin LLC, a cybersecurity and data privacy law firm to assist in handling of the incident and reported the incident to the the FBI.

RansomHub claimed responsibility for the attack on November 19, 2024, posting on their dark web leak site that they had successfully stolen approximately 1.1 terabytes of data from the school district's networks.

The compromised includes:

  • Social Security numbers
  • Financial account information
  • Insurance information
  • Names and addresses
  • Dates of birth
  • Driver's license numbers
  • Health insurance details
  • Medical information
  • Contact information

The number of affected individuals has not been disclosed by the district. It's not clear why the report is made public over 6 months after the incident. District officials have emphasized that they are not aware of any actual or attempted identity theft or fraud resulting from the incident.
