A significant cyberattack has disrupted operations at Malaysia's Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), according to joint confirmation from the country's National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA) and Malaysia Airports.
The attack targeted Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), the company responsible for operating most of Malaysia's airports and caused disruptions starting from March 23, 2025. The incident affected multiple critical airport systems, including:
- Flight information displays
- Check-in counters
- Baggage handling systems
These disruptions forced the airport to revert to manual operations for more than 10 hours, according to reports. Former lawmaker Wee Choo Keong shared photos from the airport showing staff using whiteboards to manually display departure times, indicating substantial disruption to electronic systems.
The nature of the attack, any stolen data or number of affected individuals is not disclosed. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim confirmed during a speech on 25th of March that attackers demanded a $10 million ransom, which he claims to have promptly rejected.
