Lancashire schools hit by ransomware attack

Learn More

Schools across Lancashire, specifically those under the Fylde Coast Academy Trust, have been hit by a ransomware attack, significantly disrupting their computer systems. Dean Logan, CEO of the trust, confirmed that all 10 of its academies, including Blackpool's Aspire, Montgomery, and Unity schools, as well as various primary schools, have been impacted.

The ransomware has infected the trust’s IT infrastructure, resulting in limited accessibility to systems, with schools having to revert to non-IT-based processes. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed and could take several days.

Key impacts of the attack include:

  • All 10 academies under the Fylde Coast Academy Trust have been affected.
  • Phone lines have also been disrupted.
  • The schools have shifted to non-IT-based operations.

The trust received immediate support from the Department of Education and a cybersecurity team. Restoration of key services is expected by next week, though full recovery may take several weeks. School leaders and staff are focusing on ensuring the continuity of education for pupils during the recovery process.
