The Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN), one of the largest healthcare networks in Pennsylvania, is reporting a cyber attack where personal and medical data of over 500 patients was stolen.
The incident, which occurred on January 8 and was discovered in early February, resulted in the hackers gaining access to
- patients' email addresses,
- banking information,
- medical records,
- Social Security numbers.
The attackers used a ransomware program originating from the BlackCat hackder gang.
LVHN is offering affected patients 24 months of free identity theft protection.
The BlackCat virus has been used by hackers believed to be operating out of Russia since at least November 2021, targeting organizations such as drugmakers and hospitals.
