The libraries under the jurisdiction of Woolhara Council have suffered a cyberattack. Woollahra Council is located in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The council manages library facilities in Double Bay, Paddington, and Watsons Bay. While it is not confirmed that data was stolen, there was unauthorized access to the software storing this data. The cyberattack occurred on Friday, December 15, as stated in the council’s email to the affected individuals.
Woollahra Council is alerting its residents with library accounts about the cyberattack on a third-party software system utilized by the library for various services like room reservations, fine issuance, and computer and printing access.
The cyberattack has resulted in significant disruption of library services and has potentially compromised user data such as:
- names,
- email addresses,
- mobile and landline numbers,
- postal addresses,
- encrypted passwords
- partial credit card details.
The number of affected individuals is not disclosed.
The software's provider, whose identity wasn't disclosed by the council, has implemented a security fix for the system. The council has contacted those potentially impacted by the breach, urging them to be cautious of scams and to reach out to ID Support NSW for assistance in case of identity theft or online attacks.
