Long Beach Begins Notifying Residents of 2023 Data Breach

The City of Long Beach has started notifying individuals whose personal information may have been compromised in a cybersecurity incident that occurred in late 2023.
The data breach was initially discovered on November 14, 2023, when city officials detected an "unauthorized actor" on the municipal network. At the time, the intrusion impacted the city's website and various network systems. The city completed its investigation into the incident last month - after over 2 years and determed that certain files containing personal information may have been accessed or acquired by unauthorized individuals.
Exposed data types include
- Dates of birth
- Credit and/or debit card information
- Medical data
- Social Security numbers
- Driver's license numbers
- Passport numbers
Update - As of 16th of April 2025, the city reportes that the personal data of 305,347 people may have been compromised. Apart from the already listed expoded data types, the city said exposed data could include “biometric information," and health insurance information.
Initially, the nature of the attack and the number of affected individuals were not disclosed. City officials noted that not all affected individuals had all these types of information compromised, with the exposed data varying by person.
As of Monday 14th of April 2025, the city has begun mailing notifications to affected individuals at the addresses on file in the city's records.
The city has established a dedicated hotline to address concerns related to the breach. Affected individuals can call 888-802-9667 between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays for information and assistance.
