Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago is currently managing a significant cybersecurity incident that led to the hospital taking its network systems offline as a preventive measure. This response comes after the hospital identified the cybersecurity matter, prompting an immediate investigation with the assistance of leading experts and law enforcement agencies.
Lurie Children’s has set up a dedicated call center to assist patient families and community providers with non-urgent patient requests, care questions, information regarding scheduled appointments, and patient prescription refill requests.
No details are disclosed about the nature of the attack, compromised data or individuals.
It's worth noting that no major ransomware gangs have so far claimed responsibility for this cyberattack.
Update - as of 27th of February 2024, the Rhysida group is claiming responsibility for the attack and is demanding $3.4 million from Chicago's Lurie Children’s Hospital.
As of 13th of March 2024, a hospital spokeswoman confirmed that individuals claiming to be Rhysida claim to have sold data they allege was taken from Lurie Children’s. The hospital is working with internal and external experts and law enforcement and are actively investigating the claims.
As of 28th June 2024, Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago is informing 791,000 individuals that their data was compromised by the attack.
