Minnesota State University-Moorhead hit by ransomware, struggling to recover

Learn More

Minnesota State University-Moorhead (MSUM) is grappling with a ransomware attack since February 1st, which has impacted several of the university's servers. The IT team discovered that these servers were compromised, locked, and encrypted by ransomware, prompting an investigation and restoration efforts.

The cyberattack has caused significant network outages, affecting students, faculty, and staff by limiting access to university file servers, printing services, and the MSUM website. Systems integrated with other universities and the broader Minnesota State college and university network appear to be unaffected. Classes have continued without cancellation, although the university community has faced considerable inconvenience.

MSUM claims that the ransomware-affected servers did not contain sensitive information such as social security numbers or credit card details, but they didn't disclose what data was compromised, nor the number of affected individuals.

The university is committed to notifying individuals if it's later found that personal information was accessed.
