Numerous individuals globally have reported seeing unexplained $1 or $0 charges from "shopify-charge.com" on their credit card bills, even though they did not attempt to purchase anything.
The events started on July 21, 2024 and ver the following days, the number of affected individuals has risen.
These charges have been noted on both physical and virtual credit cards from various providers, including Discover, Monzo, Capital One, and other Visa cards. In some cases, these charges were attempted on deactivated cards.
Upon investigation, the charges listed the phone number 866-938-2427, which connects to Halsted Financial, a debt collection firm. When contacted, Halsted Financial stated they were unaware of any association with these charges. Additionally, some charges included a non-existent address in Texas, further complicating the issue.
Shopify-charge.com is a legitimate site operated by Shopify, typically used for processing subscription fees or purchases made through Shopify stores. Despite some individuals claiming never to have used their credit cards on Shopify, the platform is widely used by various online stores, which may not be immediately recognizable to the consumers.
Shopify has clarified that this card testing fraud is unrelated to a recent data breach at one of its vendors.
It seems that criminals have obtained a very comprehensive list of credit card numbers and are using shopify to verify the validity of the cards before abusing or selling them.
Users should check their credit card statements for any unusual charges - even charges of less than a dollar and reach out to your bank or card issuer to report any fraudulent charges.
