Oregon Department of Corrections leaks personal information of 861 individuals

Learn More

The Oregon Department of Corrections (ODOC) reports they have inadvertently disclosed personal information of 861 individuals.

An employee mistakenly sent emails on August 28 and 29 containing sensitive data to two individuals attempting to visit an ODOC facility. The exposed information included:

  • names,
  • driver's license numbers,
  • state identification numbers,
  • dates of birth,
  • FBI numbers.

After discovering the error on September 9, ODOC contacted the unintended recipients, and by September 16, the emails and their attachments were deleted from both the recipients' accounts and the state's mail systems. ODOC also notified the Oregon State Police and Cyber Security Services, collaborating to prevent similar incidents in the future.

To support those affected, ODOC is offering free identity theft resolution services for 12 months. While officials believe the risk to individuals is minimal, they recommend that impacted persons remain vigilant and monitor their personal information.
