An investigation is underway by U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) officials following the discovery of a data breach on May 12.

The breach compromised the personal information of approximately 39,000 individuals, including Marines, sailors, and civilians working within the Department of Defense.
The breach occurred when an unencrypted email was sent from Combat Logistics Regiment 17, based at Camp Pendleton, which is part of the 1st Marine Logistics Group. The email, contained various personal details such as full names, the last four digits of Social Security numbers, contact information (phone numbers, email addresses, residential and mailing addresses), as well as account and routing numbers for affected individuals' checking and savings accounts. This information was sent to the administrators of the Defense Travel System.

The Commanding Officer of Combat Logistics Regiment 17, stated that there is currently no evidence suggesting that any personally identifying information (PII) has been shared outside of official government channels.
The leaders of the 1st Marine Logistics Group are actively reaching out to individuals who may have been impacted by this incident.
