A comprehensive database, encompassing 1,523,776,691 records and occupying 1.16 TB, was discovered to have been exposed unsecured online and is believed to be associated with Real Estate Wealth Network (REWN). Real Estate Wealth Network (REWN) is a company that offers education and resources for real estate investing.
The database contains extensive information related to real estate, and included a wide array of data categorized into folders like:
- property history,
- motivated sellers,
- various legal issues of individuals such as bankruptcy, divorce, and foreclosures.
- detailed information about property owners,
- detailed information about property sellers,
- detailed information about property investors,
- names,
- physical addresses,
- phone numbers,
- service providers,
- details of downloads from the database.
Apparently the data set inlcuded data of celebrities including: Kylie Jenner, Britney Spears, Floyd Mayweather, Dave Chappelle, Elon Musk, Dolly Parton, Mark Wahlberg, and others, with their street address, purchase price and date, mortgage company, mortgage loan amount, tax ID numbers, taxes owed, paid, or due, and other information.
The number of affected individuals is not clear, nor is the time the database was exposed online.
Following the discovery of the breach, a responsible disclosure notice was promptly sent, resulting in the securing of the database from public access. Subsequently, a representative from Real Estate Wealth Network contacted the discoverer, expressing gratitude for the notification and confirming the database's ownership.
These records can be abused by criminals and realestate competitors in multiple ways - from home invasion, social engineering or phishing attacks, property and mortgage fraud to sales lead generation for unsolicited purchase offers.
