Spanish Civil Guard reports Vodafone data breach

On the 22nd of November Spain's Guardia Civil issued an alert to Vodafone customers about a security breach that involved unauthorized access to the systems of a Vodafone partner. The breach resulted in the exposure of both personal and banking information for a subset of customers.

Vodafone responded by contacting the affected customers with an SMS containing security advice.

The compromised data, includes

  • customers' names,
  • government-issued ID numbers,
  • contact information,
  • email addresses,
  • physical addresses,
  • banking details.

The report doesn't disclose the implicated Vodafone partner, the nature of the breach or the number of affected individuals.

In response to this breach, Vodafone and the implicated partner have taken significant steps to strenthen their cybersecurity measures. Vodafone has urged customers who received an alert to seek detailed information through their official website or by calling a dedicated helpline.

Customers are advised to be vigilant, especially when receiving unsolicited contact from individuals claiming to be associated with their bank, to avoid sharing personal information, and to change any codes related to telephone line payments. Vodafone has reassured customers that they would not request sensitive information such as passwords or PINs through SMS, email, or phone calls.
