The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office in Florida reported a ransomware attack on Tuesday 6th of August 2024.
The attack led to limited access to certain records.
Despite the breach, law enforcement service responses have not been impacted due to the agency's swift action to cut off access from the attacker. The Sheriff's Office is collaborating with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), Florida Digital Services, and other IT professionals to investigate the nature of the attack.
Details on the specific records affected and other information regarding the incident have not been disclosed. The office acknowledged the support from various Sheriff’s Offices that have encountered similar incidents and offered assistance.
Update - Rhysida ransomware gang has listed the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office on its data leak site. According to a post by Emsisoft Threat Hunter Luke Connolly, the ransomware group is auctioning the stolen data with a starting bid set at 7 bitcoin, equivalent to approximately $423,000. A seven-day countdown has been initiated for potential buyers to bid on the data.

- Driver’s licenses
- Social Security cards
- Fingerprints
