Texas Tech University Health Sciences Centers (El Paso and main campus) is reporting a cybersecurity incident in September 2024, which resulted in a temporary disruption to computer systems and applications.

The organization is implementing additional safeguards, enhancing their system monitoring capabilities, and conducting a review of existing security policies and procedures.

The unauthorized access occurred between September 17-29, 2024, during which threat actors accessed and exfiltrated files and folders from the organization's network. Exposed sensitive information includes:

  • Names
  • Dates of birth
  • Addresses
  • Driver's license numbers
  • Government-issued identification numbers
  • Financial account details
  • Health insurance information
  • Medical information including:
    • Medical record numbers
    • Billing/claims data
    • Diagnosis records
    • Treatment information

The number of affected individuals, the nature of the attac and financial impact are not disclosed.

Update - as of 16th of December 2024,  Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center reports that the breach exposed the data of 1.4 million patients. The impacted individuals will be notified by the organization and will be offered free credit monitoring services.

Texas Tech has established a dedicated toll-free assistance line, is actively notifying potentially impacted individuals and has advised them to remain vigilant against identity theft and fraud.
