United Natural Foods Inc. (UNFI), North America's largest publicly traded wholesale food distributor, is hit a significant cyberattack that forced the company to shut down critical IT systems, causing widespread disruptions to customer orders and business operations across the continent. 

The company discovered the attack on Thursday, June 5, 2025. UNFI activated its incident response plan and took certain systems offline, which has impacted the company's ability to fulfill and distribute customer orders to over 30,000 retail locations across the United States and Canada. UNFI operates 53 distribution centers serving over 30,000 retail locations including Whole Foods, Target, and Walmart

The nature of the attack, any exposed data or number of affected individuals has not been disclosed. No ransomware gangs have claimed responsibility for the breach. Security experts suggest the attack has "all the hallmarks of ransomware."

The company has notified SEC, law enforcement and has engaged external cybersecurity experts. The company's stock price fell over 6% following the disclosure.
