New York City education officials have revealed that tens of thousands of students in the city were affected by the recent MOVEit data breach which exploited a security vulnerability in the widely used file-sharing software.
The students and staff are impacted through an unauthorized access to about 19,000 documents such as student evaluations, progress reports, Medicaid reports, and internal records.
Aapproximately 45,000 students, along with education department staff and service providers, had their data compromised, including:
- social security numbers,
- OSIS numbers,
- dates of birth,
- employee IDs,
The city officials plan to notify the affected individuals in the summer and offer them access to an identity monitoring service, Investigations are underway with the assistance of law enforcement agencies at local and federal levels.
