An investigation has been initiated after two council contractors - debt collector agencies Rundles and Jacobs, were affected by the MOVEit vulnerability global data breach.

The data breach seems minor compared to the millions of exposed individuals through different organizations - this event leads to potential unauthorized access to the data of 84 residents of Adur and Worthing in the UK.

The breach occurred when the contractors were utilizing the MOVEit computer system to send letters to residents regarding unpaid debts, which was hacked on or after May 31.

The councils were informed on Tuesday about the breach. Immediate investigations were launched by the councils to identify the affected individuals and determine if more community members were targeted. The compromised data included residents'

  • names
  • addresses
  • details of their debts to the councils
  • reference numbers.

The contractors have assured the councils that the hackers can no longer access MOVEit, and the data is not at further risk.

Although the councils believe the risk to residents is minimal, they are reaching out to the affected individuals to inform them and apologize for the incident.
