The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) is currently investigating a potential data breach involving a department contractor, which is connected to a broader hack related to the MOVEit vulnerability.

The exact number of affected USDA employees and the services provided by the contractor are not

disclosed. The USDA, which employs nearly 100,000 people overseeing various federal programs, has joined other federal agencies in facing the hack, believed to be an attempt to gain unauthorized access to extort organizations.

While no federal agencies have reported receiving ransom demands, previous victims in the corporate sector have encountered demands of millions of dollars.

Once again, the hackers exploited a vulnerability in the widely-used file-transfer software called MOVEit, developed by Progress Software.

The hacking group involved, known as Clop, has reportedly made audacious demands of over $100 million from certain corporate victims.
