On December 29, 2023, Akumin Inc., a Florida-based healthcare services company specializing in radiology and oncology, reported a data breach discovered after a ransomware attack on October 11, 2023. Akumin provides outpatient diagnostic imaging and radiology services to about 1,000 hospitals and health systems.
Akumin’s response to the breach involved taking systems offline, securely restoring them, and conducting a thorough investigation to understand the breach's nature and extent. The attack resulted in unauthorized access to a wide array of sensitive consumer information. The compromised data includes:
- names,
- contact details,
- birth dates,
- Social Security numbers,
- driver’s license and state ID numbers,
- health insurance and patient IDs,
- medical information.
No details are disclosed about the number of affected individuals.
Following an investigation that began after Akumin was locked out of its IT network files, the company confirmed on November 15 that the files accessed did contain confidential patient information. By December 15, Akumin had reviewed part of the compromised data and began notifying affected individuals at the end of December.
