Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, reported a data breach after discovering that their data was exposed due to a vulnerability in MOVEit, a file-transfer program used by the county.

The cause of the data breach affecting Allegheny County residents was identified on June 1, 2023, when the county became aware of a vulnerability in the MOVEit file-transfer software used for sending and receiving data, including confidential information. The subsequent investigation confirmed that files on the County's MOVEit server were accessible, some of which contained sensitive information belonging to specific residents.

Upon realizing that unauthorized parties could access sensitive consumer data, Allegheny County reviewed the compromised files to determine the leaked information and the impacted consumers. The breached data varied depending on the individual but included names and Social Security numbers.

The number of affected individuals is not disclosed.

On July 28, 2023, Allegheny County sent out data breach letters to all affected individuals.
