A data leak at MC2 Data, a background check firm, has exposed sensitive information of over 100 million U.S. citizens. Discovered by Cybernews researchers, the breach involved 2.2TB of unprotected data, left accessible online without any password protection.
The exposed database contained 106,316,633 records, affecting at least 100 million individuals. Additionally, 2,319,873 MC2 Data subscribers, including employers, landlords, and possibly law enforcement, had their details leaked. The following types of personally identifiable information (PII) were included in the breach:
- Names
- Emails
- IP addresses
- User agents
- Encrypted passwords
- Partial payment information
- Home addresses
- Dates of birth
- Phone numbers
- Property records
- Legal records
- Family, relatives, and neighbors' data
- Employment history
It's not clear how long the data has been exposed or thether any malicious actors managed to exfiltrate it. MC2 Data has not commented on the leak.
