BlackCat Group Claims To Have Stolen 80GB From Reddit

The BlackCat hacking group, also known as AlphV, has claimed responsibility for hacking Reddit in February.

Allegedly they have stolen 80GB of zipped data, and is demanding $4.5 million in ransom.

The attack was executed in February through a phishing attack on an employee, allowing the threat actors to gain access to internal documents, source code, and limited data about advertisers.

Reddit didn't share details on the phishing attack but they compared it to a phishing attack on Riot Games that allowed hackers to gain access to systems and steal game source code.

BlackCat is Reddit to withdraw its API pricing change and threatens to release user statistics data and highlights alleged user censorship by Reddit.

Although the attack is not new, it seems that the latest API change and Reddit's insistence in high pricing for APIs and the pushback with users in preparation for an IPO has triggered the publication of the attack and threats to leak the data.
