The city hall of Calvia is reporting a cyberattack probably caused by ransomware. Calvià is a municipality located on the island of Majorca, which is part of the Spanish autonomous community of the Balearic Islands. Situated in the southwestern part of Majorca, Calvià lies between the Serra de Tramuntana and the Serra de Na Burguesa mountain ranges.
The attack occurred in the early hours of Saturday 13th of January. A crisis committee consisting of IT experts, department leaders, and councillors was assembled. The IT department, along with external experts, is conducting a thorough forensic analysis of the attack and focusing on restoring the compromised services.
No details are dicslosed about any data breach, whether a ransom has been demanded for data or any details about the attack. Staff are being instructed on necessary procedures, such as changing passwords.
Following the completion of the forensic investigation, its findings will be submitted to the Guardia Civil's telematic services unit.
Update - The Calvià city council reports that the attackers are demanding a €10 million extortion fee, which Mayor Juan Antonio Amengual has refused to pay, aligning with Spain's pledge against paying ransomware demands. The attack has disrupted administrative services, forcing the suspension of all deadlines until the end of January.
