Mainstreet Equity Corp., a major Canadian rental company managing multiple properties in Winnipeg, is reporting a cybersecurity breach that occurred on May 21, 2024.

According to a letter sent to tenants, an "unauthorized third party" accessed a portion of the company's IT infrastructure, temporarily disrupting some of its systems.

Following an investigation, it was determined that the breach may have compromised personal information belonging to tenants and guarantors. The breach specifically affects those who paid rent or a security deposit as a roommate, guarantor, or primary renter between April 2023 and June 2024.

The compromised data includes:

  • Names
  • Banking information

No details are disclosed about the nature of the attack or the number of affected individuals.

Mainstreet claims there is no evidence indicating that the compromised information has been used for fraud or identity theft. The company has notified affected individuals and is offering 12 months of credit monitoring services as a precaution, although some tenants object that they were not informed about the breach directly by the company, learning about it through news reports.
