The City of McKinney, Texas is reporting a data breach that occurred on October 31, 2024. It was was detected on November 14, 2024. City officials engaged forensic consultants and reported the incident to law enforcement while securing their systems.
The investigation confirmed potential exposure of personal information including:
- Social Security numbers,
- driver's license numbers,
- credit card details,
- financial account information,
- medical insurance data.
The nature of the attack is not disclosed. In total, the city said 17,751 of its 213,000 residents were impacted by the breach.
The city began mailing notification letters to affected individuals with known mailing addresses on February 4, 2025. The city is offering impacted individuals one year of complimentary credit monitoring and identity theft protection services.
