Data breach at Methodist Homes exposes sensitive data of nearly 26,000 people

Methodist Homes of Alabama and Northwest Florida, a provider of senior housing and healthcare services, is reporting a data breach that potentially compromised the personal and health information of 25,579 residents, employees, and individuals associated with the organization. 

The provider detected suspicious network activity on October 14, 2024. Methodist Homes started an investigation, took parts of its network offline and notified law enforcement, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services at the Office for Civil Rights, and state regulatory authorities about the security breach.

The investigation confirmed that attackers may have accessed or stole data between October 2 and October 14, 2024. Exposed data includes:

For residents and patients:

  • First and last names
  • Social Security numbers
  • Driver's license and state identification numbers
  • Health insurance numbers
  • Medical record numbers
  • Medical histories
  • Diagnoses and treatment information
  • Patient identification numbers
  • Medicare and Medicaid numbers
  • Discharge dates
  • Birth dates

For other individuals:

  • First and last names
  • Social Security numbers
  • Driver's license and state identification numbers
  • Health insurance numbers
  • Medical history information

The nature of the attack is not disclosed. 

Methodist Homes posted a public notification and press release due to not having current mailing addresses for some people whose data may have been compromised. The company is offering complimentary credit monitoring and identity protection services for individuals whose Social Security numbers were exposed in the incident.
