Debt collection agency Financial Business and Consumer Solutions (FBCS) is reporting a significant data breach affecting approximately 1.955 million individuals. FBCS is based in Hatboro, Pennsylvania and handles the recovery of consumer debts on behalf of creditors.
The breach was discovered on February 26, 2024, when FBCS detected unauthorized access to certain systems within their network. This breach involved unauthorized access that occurred from February 14 to February 26, 2024.
The investigation indicated that certain information was accessed or potentially exfiltrated, including:
- names,
- dates of birth,
- Social Security numbers,
- account details provided by customer organizations.
FBCS claims that there is been no evidence reported of misuse of the compromised information. No details are disclosed about the nature of the attack.
In response to this incident, FBCS began notifying the potentially impacted individuals on April 4th 2024 and offering them 12 months of free credit monitoring services to help mitigate any potential damage.
Update - The data breach at Financial Business and Consumer Solutions (FBCS) has affected 3.2 million individuals, an increase from initial estimates. Initially, FBCS estimated that 1.9 million people were impacted. This number was later revised to nearly 2.7 million on May 10, and has now been updated to over 3.2 million.
As of 4th of June FBCS reports that unauthorized actors reportedly accessed the following data of 3,226,631 people:
- Full name
- Social Security Number (SSN)
- Date of birth
- Account information
- Driver’s license number or ID card
As of 9th of July 2024, FBCS reports that the incident affected 4,050,711 people.
As of 27th of July 2024, FBCS has increased the number of people impacted, now stating it affects 4.2 million people.
