Delta Dental of Virginia, a dental benefits provider in the Commonwealth of Virginia, is reporting a data breach that exposed sensitive personal and protected health information of 145,918 individuals.
The breach was caused by compromise of an employee email account, which allowed an unauthorized third party to access and potentially steal emails and attachments containing patient data. Delta Dental of Virginia detected suspicious activity associated with one email account on April 23, 2025. The investigation determined that certain emails and attachments may have been accessed and stolen between March 21, 2025, and April 23, 2025. The exposed data includes:
- Names
- Social Security numbers
- State or federal government-issued ID numbers
- Driver's license numbers
- Addresses
- Financial information
- Medical and health insurance information
- Protected Health Information
Delta Dental began mailing notification letters to potentially affected individuals on November 21, 2025 and is offering complimentary identity protection and credit monitoring services for 12 months to individuals whose Social Security numbers or driver's license numbers were potentially compromised. The services include credit monitoring, dark web monitoring, identity theft protection, and a $1 million identity theft and fraud reimbursement insurance policy.
The organization also established a toll-free call center to answer questions and address concerns related to the incident, with representatives available Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm Eastern Time at 1-833-303-6496.
