The Deschutes Public Library in Oregon reports a cyberattack that forced the precautionary closure of all branch locations through the weekend. Deschutes Public Library is the largest public library system east of the Cascades in Oregon, lending approximately two million items annually to its community.
The incident was detected on Thursday 11th of December 2025, when security software alerted library staff to suspicious activity on their network. The library system shut down all remote access to stop the intrusion and began working with an outside cybersecurity firm, to investigate the breach.
The cyberattack targeted older servers containing files from the library's communications department. The compromised servers primarily stored public relations materials including flyers advertising programs, photos, and other promotional content that can be easily replicated. As a precautionary measure, the library's main website was taken down. The closure affected all library locations in Bend, Redmond, Sisters, Sunriver, and La Pine.
Library officials expressed confidence that no patron or customer information was compromised during the breach. No details are disclosed about the nature of the attack.
The library anticipated reopening all locations for regular hours on Monday following the weekend closure.
