Kalamazoo Public Schools (KPS) is reporting that the cybersecurity incident that began on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, when the district experienced a complete loss of internet and email access across its network caused a breach.

Initially described only as a "network security incident," it's now confirmed that it was a targeted ransomware attack claimed by the Interlock ransomware group, impacting approximately 12,000 students across the district's 25 public schools.

The attack caused operational disruptions, including the cancellation of middle school conferences, but classes continued to be held. The district's phone system reportedly remained operational during the incident, allowing for some continued communication. KPS has engaged a third-party information technology firm to investigate the incident and work toward resolution.

The total number of affected individuals is reported to be approximately 12,000 students, along with an undisclosed number of staff members.

KPS has not yet issued a detailed statement regarding data recovery efforts or whether they have engaged with the ransomware operators' demands. The district has been approached for further comment, with updates expected as the situation develops.
