Dordt University reports data breach exposing data of 34 K Individuals

Dordt University is reporting a cybersecurity incident that resulted in unauthorized access to information belonging to 34,251 people in the United States.

The cyberattack was claimed by the BianLian ransomware group. The investigation determined that unauthorized access to the university's network occurred between April 21, 2024, and May 16, 2024. The hackers claim theft of approximately 3 terabytes of data. The exposed data includes:

  • First and last names
  • Dates of birth
  • Account numbers
  • Routing numbers
  • Security codes
  • Social Security numbers
  • Driver's license numbers
  • Usernames and passwords
  • Health insurance information
  • Medical information

The university claims to have implemented additional cybersecurity safeguards as needed to prevent further compromise. It's not clear why the notifications are being sent more than a year after the incident.

Written notifications were sent to all individuals whose information was involved on July 11, 2025. It's not clear whether the university is offering data protection services to the impacted individuals. The university has established a toll-free call center at 877-841-3084, available Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Central Time, excluding holidays, to support affected individuals with any questions regarding the incident.
