The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) Victoria is reporting a data breach impacting their external contact center, leading to the unauthorized access and theft of sensitive customer information.

EPA Victoria was notified by its external service provider about the illegal removal of data by an unknown third party. EPA informed the affected individuals via email on July 11 `nx implemented several remedial measures, including purging unauthorized access, resetting passwords, and enhancing security protocols.

The breach affected EPA staff and approximately 2,800 members of the public. The stolen data was taken from records in October 2021, September 2022, and October 2022 and includes:

  • names,
  • email addresses,
  • residential addresses,
  • phone numbers,

Affected individuals expressed concerns about the potential for future financial fraud and criticized the EPA for what they perceived as inadequate data protection measures.
