Fayette County is currently conducting an investigation into a data breach that occurred within its fire and emergency services system. Tthe breach is related to EMS Management and Consultants, Inc., a billing provider for the county's emergency services. It is believed that the breach occurred on two separate occasions - first on May 31 and then again sometime in June.
The breach seems to have affected up to 2,625 people associated with Fayette County Fire and Emergency Services. Upon conducting their investigation, EMS Management and Consultants discovered that an unidentified party exploited vulnerabilities in a file transfer tool, gaining unauthorized access to the MOVEit Transfer server on May 30, 2023. During this unauthorized access, certain data was taken from the server.
No details are provided as to the types of data that were exposed in the breach.
In response to the breach, EMS Management and Consultants promptly patched the tool and took necessary mitigation measures to safeguard customer data. The consultancy has also engaged third-party cybersecurity experts to assess the extent of the potential impact on the tool and the data stored on the server.
EMS Management and Consultants stated that, as of their current knowledge, there have been no reported instances of attempted misuse of the information obtained during the breach. They are actively notifying all affected customers about the incident.
