FIA, governing body of Formula 1 reports data breach

The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), the governing body for various auto racing championships including Formula 1 and the World Rally Championship, is reporting a data breach following a phishing attack that compromised several email accounts.

Founded in 1904 as the Association Internationale des Automobile Clubs Reconnus (AIACR), the FIA is a non-profit international association coordinating auto racing and promoting road safety through the FIA Foundation.

The breach was a result of attackers gaining unauthorized access to personal data contained in two FIA email accounts via phishing attacks.

The FIA notified relevant data protection authorities, including the Swiss and French data protection regulators. Additional security measures have been implemented to prevent similar future incidents.

The FIA has not disclosed when the breach was detected, whether information on individuals' personal information was accessed and the the specific types of sensitive data that were exposed or stolen.
