Florida prison staff leaks visitor contact information to all inmates at Everglades Correctional Institution

The Everglades Correctional Institution in Miami-Dade County, Florida, is part of a data leak that exposed the personal contact information of prison visitors to every inmate at the facility.
The incident occurred on July 24, 2025, when a staff member at the facility accidentally sent an email containing visitor contact details to all inmates. The email was distributed through the facility's inmate communication system, where prisoners can access emails via both interactive kiosks and secure tablets provided within the institution.
Exposed data includes:
- Full names of visitors
- Email addresses
- Telephone numbers
- Visitor registration information
The number of affected individuals is not disclosed, but is estimated to be dozens to possibly hundreds of visitors whose personal information was shared with approximately 1,600 inmates at the facility.
The breach has created significant safety concerns for the affected visitors, particularly women, who fear potential extortion, harassment, and violent retaliation. One affected individual, Jan Thompson, expressed fears about potential extortion schemes, stating "What if there's some inmate that doesn't like another inmate? And he tells his family, 'Okay, here's his wife's phone number. Call her and tell her if she doesn't pay and put $500 on my book, I'm going to have her husband stabbed and killed.' What's stopping them from doing that?"
Another victim, Patrice Kelley, was particularly concerned because she had previously removed her digital footprint from the internet after experiencing problems with a stalker.
The Florida Department of Corrections has not issued any public statement or acknowledgment of the data breach since it occurred.
