A significant data leak by the UK Post Office has sub postmasters across North and West Cumbria. The breach involved a document that listed the names and addresses of more than 500 claimants in the "Alan Bates and others -v- Post Office Limited" action.
The document, marked as a "confidential" settlement deed, was publicly accessible until its removal on Wednesday, June 19. The document exposed names and addresses of over 500 claimants of the Horizon IT scandal. At least three sub postmasters from North and West Cumbria, and one from South Cumbria, were identified in the data breach.
The Horizon IT scandal has been deemed one of the largest miscarriages of justice in British history, with ongoing efforts to compensate affected sub postmasters. Those who had convictions quashed are eligible for compensation of up to £600,000.
After reporting the isue, the document was removed by the Post Office.
The Post Office is urgently investigating how the document was published. A Post Office spokesperson confirmed the removal of the document and the ongoing investigation. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has been notified of the incident.
